You have had your first laser IPL treatment and there are a few things you need to know.

.

Laser is not electrolysis.

After Laser IPL Instructions
Large areas with dark, dense, medium to course hair growth, are most often treated with Laser or IPL, then finished up with electrolysis. Mass licensed electrologists are now trained and licensed in both Electrolysis, Permanent Hair Removal and Laser or IPL, Permanent Hair Reduction. Our variety of "tools" to clear every area make the Electrologist in Massachusetts the best professional to solve any hair problem. We have the advantage to choose the method most appropriate for any given situation, sometimes alternating different modalities.

Although it is a wonderful modality for hair removal, laser does not always complete the job. Only electrolysis can treat and get permanent results with white, blonde and red hairs.

One treatment is not the cure. As explained during the consultation, to achieve the long lasting results that you desire, it can take as few as 4 treatments and up to 8 or 10 consecutive treatments. The area you are having treated and the amount of hair must be taken into account. Also, the individuals skin color, hair color, hair texture and location of the hair has a direct effect on the results they will achieve. Hormonal issues must also be taken into account.

CONTINUITY OF TREATMENTS: To receive maximum results, the treatments must be scheduled consistently to catch the new growth when it first appears to the surface of the skin when it is in the active growing stage. 4 to 6 weeks for the face and 6 - 8 weeks for body is average.

What your skin will look and feel like immediately following treatments.

~ A mild sunburn sensation is expected. This usually lasts 2 to 24 hours but can persist up to 72 hours.

~Mild swelling and / or redness may accompany this, but it usually resolves in 2 to 3 days.

~ If swelling occurs, apply ice pack to treatment area for 10 - 15 minutes every hour for the next four hours, as needed. An oral, anti inflammatory, such as Tylenol, may be taken to reduce discomfort, used according to manufacturer's recommendation. A nonsteroidal antiinflammatory cream such as Benedryl cream may be used.

~ There is a slight chance of blistering. If this happens, apply antibacterial ointment like bacitracin. There is also a slight chance of a superficial burn with temporary darkening of the skin. Aquaphore is recommended. Be sure to tell me about this at your next appointment or contact me for more information

Appearance of hair growth or stubble will appear for 2 - 3 weeks post treatment.

This is not new growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin. Hairs that were below the skin and not present at the time of the treatment may take 1 - 6 months to appear to the surface of the skin and finally get treated.

Should scabs appear: do not pick as scarring may occur. Do let me know about this at your next appointment.

Remain Compliant: for optimum results, do not tweze or wax in between treatments. The laser needs the hair in the follicle as it is the target that attracts the light to the source of growth. You may shave or cut hairs in between your treatments.

Until redness has resolved, it is recommended to avoid:

~ Direct sun exposure to treated area

~ Applying cosmetics to the treated area.

~ Swimming, especially in pools and hot tubs.

~ Activities that cause excessive perspiration.

~ Aggressive scrubbing and the use of exfoliants on the treated area.

Use a spf 30 or greater. If you have a tan, you must wait 6 weeks before resuming treatment.

Bathe and shower as usual. Treated area may be temperature sensitive. Cool baths will often relieve sensitivity.

Possible side effects: low risk of prolonged itching, redness, and blistering. Low risk of bruising, peeling, rash, lightening or darkening of the skin color, ingrown hairs, removal of freckles, crusting, swelling and infection.

In case of signs of infection, (pus, tenderness, fever) contact us immediately.
